The terrific and tumultuous lives
of the top one hundred Polish authors and artists.
The value of Polish art and literature is barely recognized in the U.S. There are historic reasons behind it, like the partitions and the occupation of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth from 1772 to 1918 (Austria, Prussia, and Russia were not interested in promoting Polish culture) or communist rule in Poland after WWII separating Poles from the mainstream of Western culture. Another factor is the Polish language, very specific in its vocabulary and grammar, limiting access for potential readers. Even Polish laureates of the Nobel Prize in Literature are not well known in English speaking countries. It is quite surprising that popular encyclopedias and histories of art usually ignore Polish artists and their legacy, which undoubtedly brought new forms and aesthetics to the world of art! Certainly there is a lack of proper promotion of Polish art and literature. So, this book is an important answer for the need to popularize the top accomplishments of Polish artists and writers among English language readers.
The Magnificent 100 presents, in an alphabetically organized lexicon, 97 illustrated vignettes popularizing the biographies and works of over 100 Polish artists and writers through the ages. It also contains numerous online links to galleries of the artworks of artists and books of writers described in it, so readers can significantly expand their knowledge through those sources. The idea of presenting artists and writers together shows the more complex picture of the connections and interactions among them that are often treated separately. (By the way, some Polish writers were great painters as well!) The shocking aspects of the lives of our Magnificent 100 are presented in this book to help understand the psychological “genesis” of their works (and there is a lot of it).
